EDUG Annual Meeting – May 8-9, 2025, Leiden (NL)

The EDUG Annual Meeting is a two-day event: a symposium will take place on May 8, followed by the general meeting on May 9. The European DDC Users Group (EDUG) is the main interest group – outside the USA – for applications of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), a classification system used in many libraries across the world to organize library collections.

This year's symposium will take a closer look at WebDewey, the web application that today actually “is” the DDC. Another focus will be Dewey as Linked Data. These are the key aspects that will be explored:

(Web)Dewey growing from within

  • The DDC, even in its current digital form, is still connected, technically and commercially, to the print version as well. This creates a number of disadvantages when working in WebDewey and is possibly a reason why the DDC does not yet seem to fit perfectly into the digital age. We would like to discuss the problems together and find out what changes would be necessary so that our work with the DDC fits in with the times.
  • The availability of WebDewey in different languages is the result of continuous translation work in all areas of knowledge, on all levels of DDC terminology. How will AI change or affect this work? How can AI tools support our work? What are the benefits and pitfalls of an AI-assisted DDC translation?

Dewey as Linked Data

  • Since a few months there are (again) URIs for Dewey numbers available! What is Dewey as Linked Data today? Which applications are already supported? What does the linked data landscape of European library communities look like and how do we see DDC URIs embedded there? We would like to discuss with you the potential and challenges of DDC linked data uses as seen from a European perspective.

The symposium is a public event for people interested in the program. Please register if you plan to attend.
