The GND perspective on Wikibase
The aim of the strategical GND programme is to foster cooperation across all fields in arts and culture and to reach out to communities such as Wikidata and Wikipedia. To reach the goals many efforts are needed. Besides For one finding solutions related to organization and content a major role plays the development of a working technical infrastructureand second a focus on the operational infrastructure and its development. We look for solutions that will support cross-sectional data hosting and maintenance. The collaboration Collaboration will be the core idea. Thus Wikibase appears to be an ideal candidate to enlarge the GND environment. Wikibase could become a second home for GND in order to offer applications and access options to new target groups, that cannot be served by the specific interfaces offered to librarians.

Die Öffnung der GND für alle Kultursparten sowie die nahtlose Zusammenarbeit mit offenen Community-Projekten wie Wikidata und Wikipedia ist erklärtes Ziel des GND-Entwicklungsprogramms. Um dies zu erreichen, sind Aktivitäten auf allen Ebenen erforderlich. Neben organisatorischen und fachlichen Fragestellungen, spielen dabei auch infrastrukturelle Entwicklungen eine entscheidende Rolle. Es werden Lösungen benötigtet, die eine spartenübergreifende Datenhaltung und Datenpflege unterstützt - also Ansätze, die das Thema “kooperative Datenpflege” im Herzen tragen. Hier scheint Wikibase der perfekte Kandidat, um die GND-Umgebung entsprechend zu erweitern. Ein möglicher Ansatz könnte es sein, die GND künftig zusätzlich zur gewohnten Umgebung in einer Wikibase-Instanz zu verwalten - sozusagen als Zweitwohnsitz und Außenposten für Erweiterungen, die in der bisherigen Umgebung nur schwer umzusetzen sind und für einen erweiterten Zugang zur GND für Interessengruppen, für die die bibliothekarischen Redaktionsoberflächen nicht geeignet sind.
The Wikibase perspective on GND
As Wikibase reaches out to applications beyond Wikidata it aims to empower the spread of open knowledge to further education and culture, just as the Wikimedia Foundation itself.
To use GND as a point of reference could be convenient in many ways to Wikibase:
- The GND is the Integrated Authority File database in arts and culture in German-speaking countries in a growing community beyond libraries
- The GND is available under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license.
- The GND stands for similar authority file databases in other regions and languages and is related relates to them. Thus a solution that works for GND could become a mold to others and get easily spread.
- The way the GND is driven today is typical in the world of libraries. It is based on international standards such as RDA, MARC21, SRU, OAI-PMH and uses all common library systems as OCLC CBS, Aleph or Alma. Solutions found via Wikibase could, therefore, be introduced to the entire library community.

Wikibase hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, eine Nachnutzung ihrer Software über die Hauptanwendung “Wikidata” hinaus zu erreichen. Primär soll darüber natürlich ganz im Sinne der Mission der Wikimedia Foundation die freie Verbreitung von Informationen gefördert werden (insbesondere auch im Bereich von Kultur und Bildung).
Die GND hierfür als Referenzprojekt zu nutzen ist in mehrerlei Hinsicht von Vorteil:
Die GND ist für den Kultursektor im deutschsprachigen Raum (D-A-CH) der Standard zur Pflege normierter Daten mit einer rasch wachsenden Community insbesondere über den Bibliothekssektor hinaus.
Die GND steht unter CC0
Die GND steht konzeptionell stellvertretend (und als einer der Vorreiter) für ähnlich organisierte Normdateien anderer Regionen und Sprachen und ist mit diesen vernetzt. Eine Lösung die für die GND funktioniert, hätte daher auch gute Chancen eine sehr rasche Weiterverbreitung zu erfahren.
Die Lösung, mit der die GND betrieben wird, ist typisch für die Bibliothekswelt. Sie basiert auf internationalen Standards wie RDA, MARC21, SRU, OAI-PMH und bindet letztlich direkt oder indirekt (über Partner) alle verbreiteten Bibliothekssoftwaresysteme wie OCLC CBS, Aleph oder Alma ein. Entwicklungen kämen daher unmittelbar der Zusammenarbeit mit der gesamten Bibliotheks-Community zugute.
